Lanzarote now even more accessible to holidaymakers

Posted by traveltips

Holidaymakers keen to enjoy Lanzarote’s sun-drenched beaches, relaxed atmosphere and many entertainments will be pleased to hear about the launch of new flights to the island by Aer Lingus this autumn. The brilliant Lanzarote sunshine and mild climate make it an ideal island getaway any time of the year, but perfect if you want to escape the not-so-sunny British seasons. Year-round sunshine, stunning shoreline views and cheap hotels in Lanzarote are now more accessible than ever before, with new flight routes going from Gatwick to Arrecife airport three days a week.

The new route announcement follows news earlier in the year that the Spanish government will be offering discounts on airport taxes to airlines meeting certain criteria when flying to Spanish destinations. This is the government’s latest attempt to boost tourism, both on the mainland and surrounding islands, and there is the hope it will encourage other airlines to introduce new flights to the popular holiday spots. With the credit crunch hitting holidaymakers hard at the end of last year, Lanzarote – like a number of other European destinations – suffered a drop in visitor numbers. Its airport saw a reduction of 3.3% in December 2008 compared with the same time the previous year, which raised concerns about the health of local tourism.

The new route between London and Lanzarote will no doubt be well received. Similarly, it is great news for eager sun-seekers too, as holidaymakers have the chance to enjoy a paradise island break at an affordable price. The prices for the new flights start at an affordable £34.99 one way, making it a great choice for your next holiday in the sun. There are great deals on Lanzarote hotels at the moment, making the holiday even more attractive. A bungalow for two in a four star resort, for example, costs as little as £14 per person per night this October, while all-inclusive hotels in Lanzarote can be found for around £27. One positive thing about the credit cruch, is that it’s driven down holiday prices, making a sunny trip affordable this autumn.

Historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Posted by traveltips

The crystal clear spring first lured man to the ancient setting in the rolling hills of the Arkansas Ozarks. The Osage Indians reportedly first found the spring and used its healing powers. They spread the legend of the curative properties of the spring. The first white man to discover the spring was Dr. Jackson. Alvah Jackson reportedly found the spring in 1854. This could have been a minor note in Arkansas folkfore but soon became the start of the greatest boom towns in Arkansas history.

The Dr’s son had an inflammation of the eyes from a hunting accident. Dr. Jackson had his son wash his eyes from the water in the spring in what is now Basin Spring. In a few days, his eyes were greatly improved. Jackson was confinced that the water had curative powers. He started bottling the water and sold it as “Dr. Jackson’s Eye Water”. Word of mouth quickly spread thru Arkansas and the surrounding states.

Later,Dr. Jackson treated wounded soldiers from both the Federal and Confederate army. However, Dr. Jackson’s sympathies lay with the South and in 1865 he nursed some Confederate soldiers back to health. Northwest Arkansas was under the control of Federal troops so the confederate troops had to hide in the mountains. The confederate soldiers camped out in the hills above the spring. In a few months the soldiers were reported to be completely recovered.

In May, 1879; the water’s healing benefits would again be reported. Judge Saunders was introducted to the benefits of the spring water by Dr. Jackson. Judge Saunders had erysipelas (a bacterial sking infection). In 5 weeks, the Judge had lost 33 pouinds and felts competely rejuvenated. Judge Saunders said his hair returned back to black.

No one knows whether the spring waters had any actual therapeutic properties at that time. Subsequent analysis done on the waters have shown no chemical difference between these waters and those in other parts of Northwest Arkansas. A legend was born.

In 1879, 50 people lived around the springs. Dr. Jackson reportedly stated that a town would grow here and it needs a name. Discussions followed as to naming the town. People suggested the town be named after the two most famous men in the area; Jackson Springs or Saunders Springs. Someone suggested “Eureka” meaning “I have found it” for the name. This name was agreed upon as neither man wanted the town named for them. Eureka Springs as founded. The City of Eureka Springs was founded on July 4, 1879.

The healing waters fame spread and over 10,000 came to stay in tents and shanties. The spring waters would soon bring more than 25,000 people to the town. Eureka Springs’s econony developed around the springs. This is why Eureka is often called “The City That Water Built”. The springs brought in tourists as well as people with health afflictions with the result that hotels, saloons, bathhouses, dry goods stores, groceries and liveries soon sprang up. Farmers began bringing their eggs, ducks and geese from hundreds of miles away to Eureka Springs to sell. Then the Railroad came.

In 1881 there were 13 buildings called hotels catering to the growing tourist population. Local newspapers in 1882 reported that the Eureka Springs, Arkansas water was “deliciously pure and sweet”. A large variety of massage services are still offered today to visitors of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

Eureka Springs as been a tourist destination ever since. Today, Historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas is home to over: 3,000 motel rooms and cabins, 125 bed and breakfasts, 100 specialty shops (most locally owned), 20 art galleries, 75 restaurants and not one stop light. Eureka Springs offers welcoming and relaxing lodging for every traveler.

Does Air Travel Make Sense?

Posted by traveltips

Pros and Cons of Air Travel

As the decades have passed air travel has continually grown in popularity.  Air travel is convenient and safe and these are the main reasons that have contributed to the increase in popularity of air travel.  The following are some of the positive and negative factors involving air travel.

Disadvantage: Airplanes Cause Pollution.

The major shortcoming of air travel is the pollution caused by it. Emission of greenhouse gases by the airplanes into our atmosphere results in things like global warming.  For those people that try to limit their impact on the planet this could be a serious drawback.  ) Many airlines are trying to become more environmentally conscious these days.  One of the ways in which you could do this is by retrofitting winglet on the aircraft that makes the aircraft fuel efficient. In addition, most of the airlines have been modernizing their aircraft to more fuel efficient aircraft by spending a lot of money thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.

Disadvantage: High Cost

High cost of travel makes many people avoid traveling by air. It is frequently much less expensive to fuel up the car and drive to where you need to go instead of flying.  One way of solving the high cost air travel problem is to take advantage of discount
airline travel
.  Ultimate decision for flying or driving is dependent on whether you get a good deal on the airfare or not.

Disadvantage: Fear of Flying

Many people simply do not like to fly.  This is mainly because of the fact that they were on a flight that has experienced extreme turbulence or some type of other event and this has been rather terrifying.

Advantage: Speed of Travel

traveling by air is much faster as compared to other means of transportation as long as these places are connected by air. Driving in United States between places could take you a number of days whereas you could cover this distance in a few hours by flight. This helps us to enjoy longer vacations because we have to spend less time traveling.

Advantage: Easy to Travel Long Distances

Another major advantage in traveling by air is that you can travel to far off destinations which are difficult to traverse either by road or any other means.  We can pretty much travel to any destination around the globe by air.  Although many of these flying times are very long you will still find that the total time taken is much shorter than the time that would have been spent by using alternate modes of transportation.

Advantage:  Safety

It has been found in general that air travel is the safest form of travel as compared to other travel modes. Each year thousands of deadly car crashes happen.  On the other hand you find that the occurrence of train accidents is also quite common. Air travel related disasters do happen but they occur much less frequently.  For many people this makes it an easy decision to choose air travel over any other form of transportation.

Choosing air travel is a personal decision, based on the factors discussed above along with a multitude factors not discussed here.  For most travelers safety, speed of travel and cost are the over riding factors.  As long as cost remains affordable air travel will continue to grow in popularity.

Visit The World: Tips On Pleasant Wheelchair Travel

Posted by traveltips

With more municipal emphasis on accessibility, more people of limited ability are rolling their way around the world enjoying the freedom of wheelchair travel. From walkways to buildings, people in wheelchairs are experiencing more freedom.

Advocates for the disabled lobbying for increased accessibility in travel have paved the way for a new generation of wheelchair travelers. Airplanes, buses, trains and taxis are now better able to accommodate wheelchairs. With more ramps, curb cuts, elevators, wider doorways and automatic door openers in public buildings, disabled people are encountering fewer obstacles.

Thanks to them, people in wheelchairs are able to live their lives to the fullest and see the wonderful world that’s waiting for them. Having said that, people of limited mobility still have to plan their holidays more carefully than others. There are still many things to consider when making travel arrangements.

The accessibility of your destination, particularly if it’s a third world country or remote area, needs to be researched, as does your hotel, airline and accessibility to medication and medical facilities. The accessibility of your airline and hotel has to be researched as does access to medical facilities, including pharmacies if you require prescription medication

It’s a great idea to speak directly to a person at your hotel rather than making your reservation online. They can answer questions about the widths of the hotel room doors and confirm that there are ramps to the front doorways and elevators with sufficient space for a wheelchair. As with anyone who travels, get a confirmation number for your reservation. You may need proof that you did indeed make a reservation at that hotel, especially during the busy season.

Services for disabled passengers vary from airline to airline. Make phone calls to check on provisions made by the airline for wheelchairs. Ensure that you can access the plane in your own wheelchair, or if not, what type of service do they provide. Will they stow your wheelchair in the luggage compartment and what assurances can they give you that your chair will not be damaged? Find out what the airline’s policy is for lost or stolen luggage, which may include your wheelchair.

Some airlines ask for a fit-to-travel certificate or a note from your doctor about your health. Your doctor should give you a note just to be on the safe side. It should also include a list of approved medications. This will assist in getting through customs or security with a minimum of disruption if you are found to be carrying prescription drugs.

Travel insurance is another area of concern for wheelchair travelers. This is key because often those bound to a wheelchair may have compromised immune systems making them vulnerable to all manner of viruses. You need to be covered if you should become injured as a result of a fall. Food-borne illnesses and vulnerability to new viruses can also be a concern. All it takes to have a safe, healthy holiday is some advance planning.

Welsh Born Celebs (Part 1)

Posted by traveltips

There have actually been quite a few Welsh celebrities to come out of Wales in the past few years or so. Many of them really have not. This list is just a small list of the really famous people that were born in Wales and went on to become huge.

Christian Bale

It is pretty hard to believe that this hollywood actor was born in Wales. Although he really didn’t spend too much time in the country as he left when he was two he was born there which is why he certainly has to be on this list. His father was a commercial pilot and talent manager and his mother a circus clown. 1976 was the year in which he left Wales at just the age of two and he has since spent a lot of time in England, Portugal and the USA. Some of his best films have to be American Psycho, Batman Begins and Batman: The Dark Knight and of course Equilibrium.

Duffy

Aimee Duffy was actually born in 1984 and is a very successful singer/songwriter. The only album she has released so far was called Rockferry and it went on to become the number one album in the UK. What is quite rare for a lot of Welsh people nowadays is the fact that she grew up speaking Welsh as her mother tongue. The name Aimee was dropped a long while back for both personal and professional reasons.

Catherine-Zeta-Jones

This is obviously another welsh actor and she was born in the town of Swansea in 1969. She actually left school at an early age to pursue acting. The films that she is most known for include The Mask of Zorro, Chicago and The Legend of Zorro.

So there it is, only the first snippet of people that went on to become huge stars and were born in Wales, all of these people are now very wealthy.

Part two goes on further to talk to other famous Welsh celebs like Tom Jones, Katherine Jenkins and the controversial Charlotte Church.

Wales is actually a really nice spot to take one of those Family holidays UK or perhaps even one of those awesome family days out.
