Negros island was originally founded as “Buglas” by its natives. This island was named “Negros” by the Spanish navigators when Esteban de Rodriguez discovered it in April 1565. He discovered its earliest dark-skinned inhabitants to be part of the Negrito ethnic group. The first native settlements were discovered mostly on the southern region of the province. Two of them, Binalbagan and Ilog, became official towns in 1572 and 1584, respectively. The other primary communities were Hinigaran, Bago, Marayo (now Pontevedra), Mamalan (now Himamaylan City) and Candaguit.
Ilog became its primary capital when the island became a military district in 1734. In 1849, Bacolod was made provincial capital. Negros at that time became a politico-military province in 1856. At about this time, many more towns were established as a result of population growth and the arrival of immigrants from the neighboring islands of Panay and Cebu. At this time of population explosion, the cultivation of sugar in the province and the opening of Iloilo and Cebu ports to foreign commerce brought the province’s economic advancement.
In 1890, the island was separated into the Occidental and the Oriental provinces. During the national revolution in 1898, Negrense leaders joined and fought against the Spanish rule. Three years after, a Civil Government was established in the province. The first and second world wars brought turmoil and devastation in the province, but the Negrenses remained optimistic and worked hard to restore various sectors, especially the sugar industry.
The Negrenses are multilingual, which trait is typical of Filipinos. Two Visayan dialects are chiefly utilized in the province.
Hiligaynon is spoken by 80% to 90% of the population. The rest use Cebuano, which is common on the towns located towards the boundaries of Negros Oriental. English and Tagalog are widely spoken and understood in the province.
About 53% of the land area of the province is devoted to agriculture. The major industries in the province include inland fishing, poultry, livestock, grains, coffee, cacao, and black pepper. The province is also rich in mineral resources such as copper, gold, silver, molybdenum, salt, guano, stones, gravel, sand and other construction materials.
The province of Negros Occidental occupies the western part of Negros Island and is part of Western Visayas. It is composed of 13 cities and 19 municipalities. Bacolod City, the capital, is its main gateway and is reachable by plane (50 minutes from Manila and 25 minutes from Cebu) and by sea travel (20 hours from Manila and 1 hour from Iloilo).
In addition to the capital city of Bacolod, Negros Occidental has five cities, Bago, Cadiz, La Carlota City, San Carlos, and Silay City, to which the provincial government’s website adds Kabankalan, Sagay, Talisay, and Victorias.

Lots of times deer hunters will get up long before daylight, so they can make it into the woods in plenty of time to be settled and still when the sun comes up. Anytime you hunt from a stand, this is a good idea. That way the noise you make getting to your stand will be forgotten. This is good in case deer had been bedded down close to where the stand is.
But many times, hunters can face other challenges long before they reach their tree stands. One of these challenges, is escaping from the house without waking anyone. Making a quiet exit can be a real trial. I have attempted this many times, only to trip over a dyson all floors vacuum that my mother left out, and dropping my gear all over the room. The noise was earth shattering.
If I manage not to trip over anything, then most likely I may knock something over, like my alvarez acoustic guitar, which makes more noise when it gets knocked over than ten freight trains. Once I get it placed back where it belongs, I can usually hear mumbling noises from the other folks in the house who were no longer asleep, thanks to me.
All these happenings would ultimately lead to me running late. Once I managed to get the last light turned off, and get out the door, I knew I would have to make up lost time. I checked my old worn leather watch to estimate how fast I was going to drive in order to arrive at my spot at the desired time. I would toss my gear in the seat, and hammer down to my destination.
After finally arriving at the right spot, I checked the time once again. I had gained some of the time back, but still needed to hurry to my stand and get situated. I had a few tricks for hurry-up times, and was soon on my way, flashlight in hand, along the path to my stand. I made good time through the woods to where I climbed up into the stand.
I saw that my timing was good, and any time I had lost was made up for. It was perfect. My mind began to go back to the house, and I could see myself tripping over the vacuum with everything flying across the room, and I began to smile. Then remembered that awful sound of the guitar hitting the floor, and I began to giggle out loud.
It was funny to think about how my early start probably made everybody else late. And about two to three hours after daylight, I thought something else was funny too. After all that aggravation, of getting up early, getting my gear ready, picking up things I knocked over, and making my way to this tree stand, I had not see the first deer, and only had a runny nose and frozen feet to show for my efforts.
